“Kudos to the Camera!”
Although it may seem like our cameras are a “watch-dog” because they are identifying the things we are “doing wrong”, they are just as easily letting us know what we are “doing right”! This is clear case where an inattentive “4-wheeler” blew a stop sign and pulled out in front of us and got hit. I was able to provide the investigating police officer the video of the clip and he immediately determined that the person driving the car was at fault. If we didn’t have the camara, it would have been a case of “he said, she said”, and we would have likely been ticketed because the “trucker is usually at fault”! We have had multiple other incidents where our cameras saved us!
“It’s almost Spring………But not quite!”
Although it is almost spring, you are still subject to winter driving conditions as you travel through the Northern regions of the country. So, I remind you to slow your speed, increase your following distance and make the “Go, No-Go” decision. This means you should slow your speed 5 to 25 MPH (“depending on the road condition”), double your following distance, and be prepared to make the decision to stop and find a safe area to allow for weather conditions to pass and/or the roads to be cleared. Looping back to reducing your speed, if you have to reduce your speed by more than 25 MPH, I recommend you consider the Go, No-Go option. Please reach out to me, Al or Sam if you have any questions about winter operations.

“We’ve got a new Safety Management Partner!”
Beginning March 1st , Liberty is partnering with Claimshield a trucking safety consulting company that is providing Safety support by:
1. Providing a dedicated Safety consultant
2. Providing driver training Safety courses
3. Providing Driver Qualification File management and review
4. Monitoring, alerting and reporting our MVR’s
5. Counseling on refining our Fleet Safety Program
6. Counseling on enhancing our CSA scores
7. Compiling and analyzing periodic safety scoring
The chart below shows the scores that have cautionary triangles:

“Seen our CSA scores lately?”
Our CSA or “Compliance, Safety and Accountability” scores directly affect our ability to get freight from our brokers. The reality is, there have been multiple occasions over the last year or two when we were unable to haul freight because our CSA score was too high. See our scores below:
- Unsafe Driving – Satisfactory – 27% with a 65% intervention threshold
- Crash Indicator – Unsatisfactory – 70% with a 65% intervention threshold
- HOS Compliance – Unsatisfactory – 81% with a 65% intervention threshold
- Vehicle Maintenance Unsatisfactory – 86 with an 80% intervention threshold
- Controlled Substances and Alcohol – Satisfactory – 30% with an 80% intervention threshold
- Haz Mat Compliance – Not Applicable – We do not haul Hazmat
- Driver Fitness – Satisfactory – 0% with an 80% intervention threshold
- Insurance and Other – Satisfactory – 0% with an 80% intervention threshold
In the graph the blue line is the national average, and the orange line is where we are. We do need to be below the blue line to be compliant.
For additional context
We had 84 DVIR related violations that account for 97% of the Vehicle Maintenance CSA score. To be more specific, the maintenance violations below are the ones that affected us negatively: 1. Brakes (36 violations contributing to 38% of CSA score) 2. Lighting/Lamps (28 violations contributing to 26% of CSA score) 3. Tires (9 violations contributing to 24% of CSA score) Additionally, we have had 24 Vehicle Maintenance Vehicle OOS violations in the past 24 months, which have contributed to 41% of our Vehicle Maintenance CSA score.

"Safety isn’t just a rule—it’s a mindset. Every mile, every stop, every load—stay alert, stay prepared, and get home safe." 🚛💨
“Check it out!“
Over the last two months our number of roadside and over the road service calls have increased by 50%. In part, this is a result of the winter weather’s effect on our equipment. We can’t control the weather….however, we can control how we deal with it! For your part, it is imperative that you perform through pre-trip and post-trip on your tractors and trailers. As some of you have discovered, I have been and will continue to evaluate your pre-trip inspections based on individual Vehicle Maintenance CSA violations related to pre-trips and post-trips.
“Here are the Numbers!”
Speaking of monthly safety scoring, out
of our 33 drivers, the six drivers below scored 99 or100 for 2/1 to 3/1:
- David Gibson – 100 pts – 13,590 Miles
- Drew Johnson – 100 Pts – 10,316 Miles
- Ed Bussie – 100 Pts – 9,508 Miles
- Rodney Samuel – 99 Pts – 11,756 Miles
- Douglas Kizer – 99 Pts – 10,334 Miles
Great work, Gentlemen!
I will provide everyone else’s ranking and scores upon request.
For understanding, these scores are based on the events detected by the Samsara/Motive telematics unit (camera) your truck:
- Speeding
- Harsh Braking
- Harsh Turns
- Following Too Closely
- Near Collisions
- Collisions
- Rolling Stops
“What’cha gonna do about it?”
Actually,
what are we going to do about it?:
1.
Please conduct through pre and post
trip DVIR inspections that focus on tires, lights and brakes.
2.
Please make sure your truck is
getting in for its scheduled PM (“oil service”)
You will find a sticker stating the next service date and mileage on
your instrument cluster, or on the top left side of your windshield.
3.
Corporately, we will hold you
(drivers) accountable by levying the appropriate remedial actions.

Although our Vehicle Maintenance SCA score is high, we are currently trending down! If we eliminate any future violations, we will below the “Alert” threshold of 80% by June. Take a look at the projected trend lines below:

“What IF…TA?”
Please make sure your 2025 IFTA is installed on your truck. They were supposed to be installed by 1/31. I have them here at the Steele Ave office if you need one.
“Play it safe!”
“Please be thinking about making sure your equipment is satisfactory operating condition and operating ‘said’ equipment in a safe manner, always”!
